AN OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM LADLAD - NEGROS

By Pol Cabalfin

Ladlad Negros is still alarmed as two members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community have been killed in the month of June.

The two recent victims, one from Silay and the other from Victorias, suffered from more than 20 stab wounds each. On top of this, two cases were also reported for the month of May.

The successive killings of the LGBT members should be treated seriously . We are calling the attention of the local police to further investigate these untimely deaths. We also urge our local government officials to work with the local LGBT groups and associations to fight this grisly trend of murders of LGBTs.

The local governments of Bacolod, Victorias and other cities and municipalities of Negros island must enact legislations against discrimination, bullying and homophobia as these all lead to hate crimes.

The killings here in Negros are just part of the greater whole. In the entire Philippines, around 20 reported LGBT killings have been recorded by the Pink Watch this year, with most of the victims suffering from fatal stab wounds.

At the close of the Pride Month (June), still no justice was given to most of the murdered victims. We demand that justice be brought to these deaths.

We in Ladlad strongly condemn all LGBT killings here in Negros and in the whole country. Like everybody else who have rights, we demand that ours be respected and looked after.
End Discrimination. Stop Hate. Stop LGBT Killings. Forward Equality. Spread Love.

STATEMENT of LADLAD PARTY LIST ON THE REMARKS OF MS. MIRIAM QUIAMBAO AGAINST LGBTs.

Ladlad Party List – the national political party of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender  (LGBT)Filipinos – is asking Ms Miriam Quiambao to make an unconditional apology for her remarks that have defamed, demeaned, and demonized the LGBT community.

Showing the zeal of the newly converted, Ms. Quiambao categorically condemned LGBT Filipinos when she said that we are a “a lie from the devil.” In the 21st century, no self-respecting Christian pastor, priest, bishop and higher ecclesiastical authorities would dare mouth words like these. But not this late-in-the-day Born-Again Christian, who has no compunction in judging those who are different from her.

At the heart of LGBT Filipinos is our sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) which may be different from the heterosexual, but should thus not  be cause for judging us. But Ms. Quiambao, with her antediluvian rhetoric, not only betrays a shallow knowledge of the bible and Christian teachings. She also betrays condescension and bigotry for the LGBT Filipinos who, like her, have the same rights as the other citizens of the land.

Therefore, we demand from her an official, unconditional apology. Only through this can she, using her perverse sense of logic, “sin no more” and calm the troubled waters that have been generated by her unfair and unChristian statements.

WorldWide LGBT Civil Rights March - MANILA

PROGRAMME:

8:30 – 9:00am Assembly Time/Registration/Briefing
Quezon City Memorial Circle - East Avenue Entrance
LOOK FOR THE RAINBOW FLAG

9:00 – 9:45am March Around Quezon Memorial Circle

9:45 – 10:00am Congregate at Freedom Bell

10:00 – 11:00am PROGRAM PROPER

11:00 – 12:00nn Budol Solidarity Meal

On April 21, 2012 Filipino lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT), will join the Worldwide LGBT Civil Rights March(i) to
Demand for EQUAL RIGHTS and RESPECT FOR HUMAN RIGHTS of ALL PEOPLE Regardless of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI)!

The Philippines LGBT Civil Rights March is a call to action to:

• Remind us of the need to address the grave human rights violations against LGBT Filipinos; that victims of these violations must be given justice and that perpetrators must be arrested and punished.

• Respect the sexual and reproductive health and rights of all people regardless of SOGI by the passage of the Reproductive Health bill – House Bill 4244 and Senate bill 2865

• Safeguard the retention of SOGI provisions of Senate Bill 2814. The bill, “the Anti-Ethnic, Racial or Religious Discrimination and Profiling Act,” which aims to penalize all forms of discrimination, has passed third reading in the Senate and is close to being finalized in Congress. The LGBT community is gravely concerned that anti-LGBT forces led by the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) will succeed in removing the SOGI provisions of SB 2814.

• Demand the inclusion of SOGI in the ASEAN Declaration of Human Rights, which is being finalized and will be presented in the ASEAN Plus Summit in November 2012 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

It is hoped that the April 21 Worldwide LGBT Civil Rights March will impress upon our legislators the urgent need to pass the anti-discrimination law to include the protection of LGBT rights. This will be helped greatly by a large show of numbers of the LGBT community and its supporters this coming Saturday.

It is time to make a stand for the civil and political rights if LGBT persons in the Philippines so April 21, 2012 will be a celebration of LGBT rights and a testament to our continued fight for equal rights.

CareDivas goes to Onstage,Greenbelt. April27-29

These shows will be shown at Onstage, Greenbelt as a result of the first-ever partnership of PETA and Repertory Philippines since the their founding forty-five years ago.

The scheduled encore performances are packed with the same combination of explosive dance numbers, fancy music, comedic antics, and a visual feast of glitter, wigs and high heels that enticed audiences of its earlier shows.

“Care Divas” remains as a highly physical, visually exciting play inspired by general life-stories of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW’s) who work as care givers of elderly Jews in the morning and pursue their own personal dreams as drag performers at night.

The play’s theatrical and wickedly funny text, written by award-winning Playwright, Liza Magtoto still cradles lovely gentle moments that mull over the lonely lives of the main characters.

The play's director Maribel Legarda shares the recognition of the plays success. In a review by (production designer/writer) Martin Masadao, Legarda is commended for her excellent treatment of the script: “Legarda does not patronize nor trivialize the OFW experience. It was good judgment on her part to exercise restraint so that the production does not come out too campy. The Care Divas' musical numbers are at the opposite end of the usual gay-comedy-bar-routine of excess, slapstick and coarse jesting.”

As a final touch, Vincent de Jesus’ musical score leaves audiences humming tunes (and demanding a cast recording) as it weaves through the narrative as the other “text” that embodies the romantic and whimsy of this play.

"Care Divas" includes a powerhouse cast of theater actors: PETA artists Melvin Lee, Vincent De Jesus, Phil Noble, Buddy Caramat, Dudz Teraña, Jason Barcial and Eric dela Cruz. Featuring guest artists: Paul Holme, Ricci Chan, Jerald Napoles, Myke Salomon, Angeli Bayani together with emerging actors Miguel Hidalgo and Dominic Miclat-Janssen. Veteran actress from Repertory Philippines, Joy Virata joins the cast as she portrays the role of Adara and Sara, formerly portrayed by PETA President, Cecilia Garrucho.

Tickets Prices: P1100 - Orch Center / P800 - Orch Side / P500 - Balcony

Ladlad Partylist's Stand on Allowing Transgender Women to Compete in the Miss Universe Pageant

Ladlad Party List welcomes the discourse on transgender people. The decision of the Miss Universe organization to include transgender women is laudable and good development to the struggle for acceptance and equality of LGBTs.

Ladlad supports the rights of pinay transgenders to join female beauty contests. BUT first, we have to amend the laws that don't allow transgenders to make corrections in their birth certificates and also to put female as their sex in their passports.

However, Ladlad gives more priority to the the basic rights of transgenders to self identify, to study, to work and to enter establishments with out conditions and prejudice.

Moreover, Ladlad Party is saddened by the insensitive comments of some including beauty queens and candidates of beauty contests that thinly borders on discrimination. The real essence of a woman is not if you're a biological born woman or a transgender woman but a totality of a woman's disposition in the journey of life and in the pursuit of happiness. It is more lamentable to debate on the essence of a woman if reduced merely to anatomy and procreation. A woman is more than her beauty, physiology and producing an offspring. It is about her self-determination, self-identity, human experience, bravery, character and abilities and skills.

Thank you so much!

Ms. Bemz D. Benedito
Transgender Woman and First Nominee, Ladlad Party List

Day of Silence

Sponsored by GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, the National Day of Silence is a day of action in which students across the country take some form of a vow of silence to call attention to the silencing effect of anti-LGBT bullying and harassment in schools. Through their activities students can speak out against harassment and organize for change for their schools and communities. Traditionally all LGBT people observe The Day Of Silence, not just students. It takes all of us to make a difference

Worldwide Civil Rights March and Earth Day

How appropriate is the 2012 WORLDWIDE LGBT Civil Rights MARCH to be on April 21, 2012, the day before EARTH DAY on April 22, 2012; DIFFERENT DAYS, but the VERY SAME WEEKEND. It is EXTREMELY appropriate.

2012 is the 42nd Anniversary of EARTH DAY and 2012 is also the 42nd Anniversary of the very First GAY PRIDE PARADE taking place in New York City with more than2,000 LGBT marching (which just happened to be the 1 year anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising)!

EARTH DAY 2012 promotes environmental awareness and will focus on BUILDING THE ENVIRONMENTAL MOVEMENT & ENGAGING NEW ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVISTS AROUND THE GLOBE!

The 2012 WORLDWIDE LGBT Civil Rights MARCH will focus on the RENEWED LGBT MOVEMENT & ENGAGING LGBT CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVISTS AROUND THE GLOBE!

There is NO BETTER TIME to have the 2012 WORLDWIDE LGBT Civil Rights MARCH and the timing of it on the same weekend (but different days) of EARTH DAY 2012 is NOT ONLY EXTREMELY APPROPRIATE, but will show the WORLD the importance of PROTECTING BOTH THE EARTH and its INHABITANTS EQUALLY, as well as show the WORLD the importance of PROTECTING the UNALIENABLE BIRTH RIGHT of every being living together on PLANET EARTH!

LADLAD ELECTS NEW OFFICERS; ALL SET FOR 2013

Ladlad Partylist conducted a national convention attended by coordinators and members all over the country to set in motion its preparations for the 2013 midterm elections.
The highlights of the convention was the election of a new Board of Trustees and Congressional nominees to represent the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Filipinos in the 16th Philippine Congress next year.
“We are gathered here today to show our love and support for our Ladlad party list,” said Senior Party Adviser,  Mr. Boy Abunda. “Today, you are home. We are all home in Ladlad, mula ngayon hanggang 2013 and beyond,” Abunda added.
In Filipino, "ladlad" means to come out and assert one's human rights as equal to all.  It means to take one's place in the sun, with dignity intact.
Ladlad’s first nominee in Congress is Ms. Bemz Benedito, a transgender woman. She was also the first nominee in 2010 elections and the chairperson of the organization until last month.
Prof. Danton Remoto, the newly installed chairperson of Ladlad, is the second nominee. Remoto was the Communications Officer of the United Nations Development Program before he joined TV 5 as Head of Research and Desk Manager.
The 3rd nominee is Atty. Germaine Leonin. She is the founding president of Rainbow Rights Project Inc., an organization composed of lawyers.
The fourth Congressional nominee is also a lawyer, Atty. Raymond Alikpala, author of the book God Loves Bakla. Mr. Pidot Villocino, a proud gay man, is the 5th nominee of the party. He hails from Davao City and works for the Integrated Gender and Development Division of Davao City.

The new Board of Trustees of the organization who were elected during the February 18, 2012 convention were Prof. Danton Remoto, Mr. Dexter Macaldo, Rev. Ceejay Agabayani of Metropolitan Community Church-Quezon City, Ms. Ivanka Custodio of Lesbian Activism Project and Ms. Rica Paras and Ms. Santy Layno of the Society of Transsexual Women of the Philippines (STRAP).

Aside from electing Prof. Remoto as its Chairman, the Board of Trustees also appointed a new set of officers. Vice Chairman is Mr. Edmond Osorio; Secretary is Ms. Ivy Krystel Hapitan, and the  Treasurer Mr. Raffy Aquino.

LGBT PARTY HAILS THE VICTORY OF MS. HEART DIÑO AND ALEX CASTRO

LADLAD Partylist hailed the election of Ms. Heart Diño as the first transgender Chairperson of the University Student Council (USC) in the University of the Philippines (UP) – Diliman.

Professor Danton Remoto, the newly installed Chairperson of Ladlad said the victory of Ms. Diño shows that the horizon of one’s dreams is infinite, whether one is lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT).

“The power to lead has been transferred to the capable hands of a transgender leader,” said Remoto. “We applaud this historic moment and congratulate her achievement,” he added.

The Party also lauds the election of Alex Castro, a bisexual woman, as the Vice Chairperson of the UP Diliman USC.

Ladlad hopes that this is the start of a new diversity that will emerge in mainstream politics. Remoto disclosed that the first nominee of Ladlad is a transgender woman.

“Our first nominee is Ms. Bemz Benedito. If we are lucky, it would be another milestone for the LGBT community if she becomes the first transgender Partylist Representative to be elected” Remoto said.

The political party for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Filipinos will run as partylist in the 2013 midterm elections.

University of the Philippines USC Election and Gender Discrimination

Last Saturday, I received a call from Mae Hernandez regarding a negative propaganda against one of the candidates for the Chairperson post in the University of the Philippines Student Council Election, Heart Dino. It was quite alarming because the issue focused on the said candidate's sexual orientation. Of all schools, why did it have to be in UP where it should be progressive when it comes to gender identity, sexual orientation and human rights.

According to some sources, Shaina Santiago, standard bearer of KAISA, claimed that she is the ONLY female candidate for the USC Chairperson this year (referring to Heart Dino as "fake" female)

Nikki Salazar, candidate as a USC councilor, member of Gabriela Youth, was rumoured to have shouted "Ibalik ang USC Gender Committee sa tunay na babae!"

I am a Lasallian but this got my sympathy. If these accusations are TRUE, this is an indication of transphobia and ignorance.

Shaina asked for apology and stood corrected for being politically incorrect, while Nikki on the other hand, clarified that she did not attack anyone in particular.

This caused a stir and reached LGBT networks in Europe. Sass Sasot, through her facebook account, one of the leaders for Transgender Activism, has this to say:

In support of Ms Heart Dino

by Sass Rogando Sasot

An Oxymoron? A patriarchal heteronormative transphobic feminist.
AND since when patriarchal heteronormative transphobia becomes “progressive”?

Nikki Salazar needs some re-education and Shaina Santiago needs some perspective.

A member of Gabriela Youth, Ms Salazar was quoted as saying that the University Student Council (USC) Gender Committee of University of the Philippines (UP) should be given back to a “real” woman (Ibalik ang USC Gender Commitee sa tunay na babae!).  She is saying this because at the helm of USC Gender Committee is Ms Heart Dino, an out and proud transgender woman, who is currently running to be the USC Chairperson. On the other hand, Ms Santiago, another USC Chairperson candidate running under KAISA, a student political party in UP, was quoted as saying that she is the only woman in the race (Ako lang ang babae sa laban na ito!).

One would expect that these comments would come from the filthy mouth of a sexist, heteronormative, bigoted, reactionary oppressor. But No: Ms Salazar and Ms Santiago are members of organizations that are anything but those labels. Well I’m basing that assumption on the facts that:  Gabriela Youth is a feminist organization and KAISA considers “inclusive activism” and “social progress with social justice” as its principles. These two organizations are (or should be) anything but sexist, heteronormative, bigoted, reactionary , and oppressor. After all, these organizations are always on the frontline whenever there’s a roll call of “progressive” organizations in the Philippines; unless of course, progressive now means a regression to a patriarchal, heteronormative, and transphobic way of living. Instead of focusing on whether or not Ms Dino has the ability to lead and do the job, Ms Salazar and Ms Santiago focused on whether or not Ms Dino is a “real” woman or not.  The words of Ms Salazar and Ms Santiago echoed the discriminatory words of employers as they shut the door of employment to transgender people in the Philippines.

But let’s explore furthermore the comments made against Ms Dino. What is the “real woman” they are talking about?  Does this “real woman” exist? What is the basis of this “realness”? Some would say that a “real woman” is someone who was “born” female. Some would say a “real woman” is someone who can be pregnant. Others would say a “real woman” is someone who has an XX chromosome.  It seems answering the question “Who is a real woman?” will always solicit a reference to the body.  Using the body as the arbiter of “who is a real woman” or “who is not” hides the fact that the terms we use to label our bodies are produced by culture. Our bodies are not objective grounds. Our bodies are not books that biologists, scientists, and even feminists read. We are not born into this world with bodies that have names already. Our bodies are named using names produced by culture.  When it comes to our gender, we are not born with the labels “female” or “male” on our bodies. Assigning our gender is a social decision made by the doctor; and that decision is based on the prevailing and dominant pattern of thinking in society. As what Dr Anne-Fausto Sterling said in Sexing the Body: Gender Politics and the Construction of Sexuality: “We may use scientific knowledge to help us make the decision, but only our beliefs about gender-not science-can define our sex. Furthermore, our beliefs about gender affect what kinds of knowledge scientists produce about sex in the first place.”

More importantly and more disturbingly, this exercise of determining who is a “real woman” or not is akin to all oppressive projects which uses the tactic of designating who is real or not as their weapon to exclude, dominate, and control. Determining whether someone belongs or not to the category of “real” is always a prelude to the will to dominate and oppress because those who would be considered “not real” would be designated to the category “fake.” When that process begins, it only takes a few batting of eyelashes before those considered “fake” to be stigmatized, discriminated against, and marginalized. Henceforth, those who would be considered “fake” would be considered immoral, unnatural, illegal - not human.

Levelling the Playing Field

Join the RAINBOW RIGHTS PROJECT in “Levelling the Playing Field”

This OUTGAMES activity is a unique and fun festival with sports competition, exhibits, and human rights forums on LGBTQ rights with focus on the underserved LGBTQs with disabilities and marginalized transgendered youth in the urban slums. It aims to raise awareness, bring activists in touch with other intersectionalities and share ideas with government and non-government linkages. This is partially supported by the 2nd Asia-Pacific Outgames Legacy Fund.

Currently partnering with R-Rights for this project are Outrage Magazine, MASKARA-ProGay, a group of LGBT persons with disabilities and an association of environmentalist scuba divers. We are also working to get several government agencies on board. Gabriela Women’s Partylist has already provided some support.

Planned sub-events are the following: MASKARA Outgames on 11 February at Caloocan City; the Love Dive on 10 March in Batangas; a human rights forum with LGBTQs with disabilities (date and venue to be announced); and at least one other forum. The activity plans are still work in progress, and further announcements will be posted on Facebook as often as possible.

We are still asking for additional support from other LGBTQ groups. For inquiries, expressions of interest to volunteer and to provide financial support, please contact the organizers Ms. Angie Umbac and Oscar Atadero 09226798091.

PAPA don't PREACH! Gay marriage is not a threat to humanity's future.

Once again, the infallible pope gave a statement against Homosexuality. The real threat to humanity is the removal of basic human rights and that is the right to love.  I'm a believer of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs in which a person will not get into self actualization or the completeness of being if he cannot get all his needs.  Please see the diagram below:

Let's say for example, a member of the LGBT community is deprived of his needs, he would not have self-esteem and be self-actualized. He would not function as an individual, or worst, as a citizen of his country. This will lead to discomfort and anxiety which will eventually be an emotional burden to that person. The church pays attention to its moral standards and do not look at the wholeness of an individual:  Psychologically, Physically, and Spiritually.

Having said that homosexual acts are sinful, it lays a foundation of fear that what an LGBT person's actions are against the will of God and will punish him, (on the other hand, the Pope said that pedophilia is normalwhen in our current society, even Psychologist would say that pedophilia is not a normal behavior). This causes confusion when it comes to what it right and what is wrong because the church is being bias to its teachings (the CBCP even accepted luxury vehicles even if they were teaching that corruption is wrong).

According to the Pope, the family unit is fundamental for the educational process and for the development both of individuals and states; hence there is a need for policies which promote the family and aid social cohesion and dialogue. Now, who defines what a family is? The church? That a family should have a father and a mother, and children?  A family should be a principal institution bonded by love  nourishing each other with acceptance and affection. A family headed by homosexual couples can indeed be as good, or even better, as a heterosexual family if and only if there is no social and cultural stereotyping and stigma caused by the moral standards set by the catholic church and the patriarchal society.

Homosexual behavior is normal. No argument should be laid on the table because it is no longer associated to any psychological disorder or any illness, unlike prior belief since prehistoric time and the reign of patriarchy.  When it all comes down to it, the problem lies with the acceptance of the catholic church to what is considered normal in this age of advancement in human rights regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity. The church should lay their hands OFF any state policies because it kept on being a hindrance to our development as a nation, now that is a bigger threat to humanity.

Gay marriage a threat to humanity's future - PopeVATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict said on Monday that gay marriage was one of several threats to the traditional family that undermined "the future of humanity itself".
The pope made some of his strongest comments against gay marriage in a new year address to the diplomatic corps accredited to the Vatican in which he touched on some economic and social issues facing the world today.
He told diplomats from nearly 180 countries that the education of children needed proper "settings" and that "pride of place goes to the family, based on the marriage of a man and a woman."
"This is not a simple social convention, but rather the fundamental cell of every society. Consequently, policies which undermine the family threaten human dignity and the future of humanity itself," he said.
The Vatican and Catholic officials around the world have protested against moves to legalise gay marriage in Europe and other developed parts of the world.
One leading opponent of gay marriage in the United States is New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan, whom the pope will elevate to cardinal next month.
Dolan fought against gay marriage before it became legal in New York state last June, and in September he sent a letter to President Barack Obama criticising his administration's decision not to support a federal ban on gay marriage.
In that letter Dolan, who holds the powerful post of president of the U.S. Bishops Conference, said such a policy could "precipitate a national conflict between church and state of enormous proportions."
The Roman Catholic Church, which has some 1.3 billion members worldwide, teaches that while homosexual tendencies are not sinful, homosexual acts are, and that children should grow up in a traditional family with a mother and a father.
"The family unit is fundamental for the educational process and for the development both of individuals and states; hence there is a need for policies which promote the family and aid social cohesion and dialogue," Benedict told the diplomats.
Gay marriage is legal in a number of European countries, including Spain and the Netherlands.
Some Churches that have allowed gay marriage, women priests, gay clergy and gay bishops have been losing members to Catholicism, and the Vatican has taken steps to facilitate their conversion.
In 2009, Benedict decreed that Anglicans who leave their Church, many because they feel it has become too liberal, can find a home in Catholicism in a parallel hierarchy that allows them to keep some of their traditions.
The Vatican has since set up "ordinariates," structures similar to dioceses, in Britain and the United States to oversee ex-Anglicans who have converted and be a point of contact for those wishing to do so.

News: Bading, lapnos ang balat nang buhusan ng kumukulong tubig ng ama

A pitiful scenario when a father assaulted his gay son by splashing a boiling water who suffered from a first degree burn because he can't accept his son's sexual orientation and gender identity.

Gay is Ok- Student Council Alliance of the Philippines

The Student Council Alliance of the Philippines launches the "Stop the Hate! Campaign"hinged on the Students' Rights and Welfare Bill. The message is clear and hopefully the impact would be great knowing the fact that education is one of the key in removing social stigma and stereotyping. A lot of schools have dress code policies and LGBT individuals couldn't express themselves because transgenders are forced to dress up to wear clothing meant for their assigned biological sex and not with their gender identity. Aside from the dress codes, there are still bullying happening in different schools both physically and verbally which inhibits a student to perform at his/her best.

Hate should stop now. Hate should end in the educational institutions which are supposed to mold the students mentality in sexual orientation and gender identity and not mislead them  to believing that homosexuality is a sin and a disorder.

From: http://scapnationwide.blogspot.com/
The Student Council Alliance of the Philippines is a national network of student councils/governments envisioning an educational system co-determined by all the stakeholders in the society who actively participate in making education accessible to all. The alliance advocates education reform through executive and legislative engagements; promotes unity, social consciousness as well as solidarity with other basic sector towards empowering student councils to act as catalyst for social change.
