I was the host of the 2012 International Day Against Homophobia last May 17 at the Commission on Human Rights. One of the performances was a Poetry reading from Red Tani of Filipino Free Thinkers which was quite related to the idea of Hate Crimes. The title of the poem is "Paano Pumatay ng Isang Bakla" (How to kill a Gay) by Eugene Evasco. While listening to the poem, it gave me goose bumps. The poem is posted below:

Paano Pumatay ng Isang Baklaby: Eugene Evasco

Bugbugin mo kung nagnanais maging bugaw
Na nagbebenta ng pag-ibig niyang nilalangaw.

Tilian mo ang kanyang pangungulila,
Alayan pa ng korona ang kanyang pag-iisa.

Sakalin mo kung pagkalalaki’y nililimot
Nang maibaon na siya’y haliparot.

Ipako mo sa krus kung kumakarengkeng
O ibiting patiwarik kung kumekendeng.

Embalsamuhin mo kung ayaw magpari
At turukan ng formalin kapag lumalandi.

Ipagramot mo ang kakaiba niyang pag-irog
Nang maagnas ang kanyang libog.

Parangalan mo bilang magaling na modista
Na ang pamana ay bestidang magagara.

Turuan mo siyang gumupit at mangulot
Imbes na maghapong kumembot at mangurot.

Hubugin mo siya bilang bihasang manikurista
Na beauty parlor ang magiging punerarya.

Akitin mo siyang maging alipin ng eskwelahan-
Ito ang kanyang kabaong o kaya’y himlayan.


Pagbigyan mo ang hilig niyang mag-artista
At “Inday Garutay” ang iukit sa lapida.

Kumbinsihin mo siyang maging mananayaw
At gawing punebre ang nakatikwas na nguso.

Pasakan ng silicon ang kanyang suso,
Tabasan ng bigote ang nakatiwas na nguso.

Iburol mo siya sa pagandahan
Kung matalo’y isugal na lang sa Santakrusan.

Pagapangin mo siya sa bubog, pakainin pa ng baga
Baka sakaling kumita ang perya.

Ipanalangin ang kaluluwa niya’y sa impyerno ang tuloy
O kaya’y sa purgatoryo- namamalimos ng sanlaksang abuloy.

Pagbawalan siyang maging makata
Pagka’t ang ideya’t talinghaga ay mapanghimala;

Ang bakla na pinaghirapang patayin,
Sa hiwaga ng tula’y maaari pa siyang buhayin.

STATEMENT of LADLAD PARTY LIST ON THE REMARKS OF MS. MIRIAM QUIAMBAO AGAINST LGBTs.

Ladlad Party List – the national political party of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender  (LGBT)Filipinos – is asking Ms Miriam Quiambao to make an unconditional apology for her remarks that have defamed, demeaned, and demonized the LGBT community.

Showing the zeal of the newly converted, Ms. Quiambao categorically condemned LGBT Filipinos when she said that we are a “a lie from the devil.” In the 21st century, no self-respecting Christian pastor, priest, bishop and higher ecclesiastical authorities would dare mouth words like these. But not this late-in-the-day Born-Again Christian, who has no compunction in judging those who are different from her.

At the heart of LGBT Filipinos is our sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) which may be different from the heterosexual, but should thus not  be cause for judging us. But Ms. Quiambao, with her antediluvian rhetoric, not only betrays a shallow knowledge of the bible and Christian teachings. She also betrays condescension and bigotry for the LGBT Filipinos who, like her, have the same rights as the other citizens of the land.

Therefore, we demand from her an official, unconditional apology. Only through this can she, using her perverse sense of logic, “sin no more” and calm the troubled waters that have been generated by her unfair and unChristian statements.
